KARTIK RESEARCH: WHERE CRAFTSMANSHIP MEETS CONTEMPORARY LUXURY

Pitti Uomo 111 appoints Kartik Kumra as Guest Designer, bringing Indian textile heritage into dialogue with contemporary creativity.

At the forthcoming edition of Pitti Immagine Uomo, the 111th edition, taking place in Florence from 12 to 15 January 2027, Kartik Research will be the Guest Designer. Founded by Indian designer Kartik Kumra, the brand will present its creative vision through a special event on Wednesday, 13 January, conceived specifically for Florence and shaped by the distinctive aesthetic language and artisanal identity that define the label.

The invitation reflects Pitti Immagine's interest in a new generation of designers redefining the relationship between cultural heritage, creative research and contemporary fashion. Kumra's approach to craftsmanship is instinctive yet considered: rather than treating tradition as an object of nostalgia, he approaches it as a living language, a space for experimentation and a catalyst for new creative perspectives.

Crisp, contemporary silhouettes emerge from the meeting of historical knowledge and present-day sensibilities. Within this vision, craft becomes a form of cultural capital. India's textile traditions, techniques and artisanal expertise enter the global fashion conversation, moving beyond exoticised interpretations to assert their intellectual and creative authority.

From Exotic to Expert encapsulates this shift in perspective. Handmade craftsmanship is no longer merely a heritage to preserve; it becomes an active force in shaping the creativity of tomorrow and articulating a new understanding of luxury. One grounded in the memory of the hand, the integrity of the process and the inherent beauty of imperfection.

Florence will provide the setting for collections that translate tradition into visual poetry, reaffirming the central role of craftsmanship in the evolving landscape of contemporary fashion.

The Pitti Immagine vision

“The invitation to Kartik Research as our special guest in January stems from the interest generated by his reflection on fashion. His is a spontaneous approach that sees craftsmanship as a living language and a breeding ground for new perspectives, far removed from any nostalgic celebration.

Clearly contemporary silhouettes define a project shaped by the encounter between historical knowledge and present-day sensibilities.

Here, craft reveals itself as genuine cultural capital. Indian techniques and textiles enter the global debate, freeing themselves from an exoticised framework to assert their intellectual and creative authority.

From Exotic to Expert: a shift in perspective that recognises handmade craftsmanship as an active force in shaping tomorrow's creativity and expressing a new concept of luxury, rooted in the memory of the gesture and the beauty of imperfection.

We look forward to welcoming the invigorating quality of his collections to Florence, where tradition is transformed into pure visual poetry.”

Kartik Kumra: revisiting heritage through a new lens

Kartik Research's participation in Pitti Uomo marks a significant moment for the independent label and an opportunity to revisit the historical cultural and commercial relationship between India and Florence.

Kumra's research focuses on the longstanding connection between Indian textiles and the Tuscan city, particularly the journeys undertaken by Indian fabrics through the trading networks established by Florentine merchants. Over time, these exchanges contributed to the visual language, aspirations and cultural associations now linked to Florence.

Pitti Uomo offers an opportunity to revisit that exchange in reverse: not simply the historical movement of Indian textiles towards Florence, but the symbolic return of a rich artisanal tradition through the vision of a new generation of designers.

Kartik Kumra's statement

“I am truly grateful to the team at Pitti Immagine for this opportunity. Looking at the creatives who have taken part in the Guest Designer programme over the years, finding ourselves on that list is something special and certainly not something to be taken for granted.

For us, this is an opportunity to continue growing as we always have, allowing the world around us to guide our work towards new directions.

This season, our interest centres on the ancient relationship between Indian textiles and Florence, and on the journey of Indian fabrics orchestrated by Florentine merchants, which became part of the visual language and aspirational identity associated with the city today.

It is wonderful to return to that exchange, this time in the opposite direction. Participating in Pitti Uomo represents an incredible opportunity for an independent label like ours. We are genuinely excited — and slightly overwhelmed — by the prospect of bringing Kartik Research to Florence.”

ABOUT KARTIK RESEARCH

Founded by Kartik Kumra in 2021, Kartik Research is an artisanal fashion label based in New Delhi, India. Its philosophy is built around a fundamental principle: reintroducing humanity into the way we dress, restoring the importance of the human hand, skilled workmanship and the authenticity of the creative process.

Each garment reflects a commitment to traditional craftsmanship, featuring handwoven fabrics and embroidery executed entirely by hand. The resulting aesthetic celebrates materiality, technique and the unrepeatable imperfections that emerge from a genuinely artisanal process.

Kumra draws inspiration from the richness of India's subcultures, developing collections that explore cultural heritage, identity and contemporary aspirations. From the psychedelic rock aesthetic of the 1960s to Indo-modernist art of the 1980s, the label examines how traditional craftsmanship can reflect, interpret and accompany the evolution of cultural movements.

A defining element of the brand is its close collaboration with master artisans. Through these partnerships, Kartik Research seeks to revive forgotten Indian crafts, preserve specialist knowledge and bring these traditions to the attention of a global audience.

Kartik Research's development has been accompanied by a series of notable recognitions across the international fashion and cultural landscape.

Global presence and retail distribution

Kartik Research operates two flagship stores, in New York and New Delhi, and distributes its collections through a carefully selected international network of retailers.

These include Mr Porter, Selfridges, Dover Street Market — with locations in London, New York, Los Angeles, Ginza, Paris and Beijing — Harrods, Mohawk General Store, Lane Crawford and Biotop.

This international presence reflects growing interest in an independent fashion proposition that brings together cultural research, artisanal quality and a contemporary vision of luxury.

A new horizon for luxury

With Kartik Research, Pitti Uomo 111 places the spotlight on a vision of fashion in which tradition is not an endpoint, but a dynamic resource for imagining the future.

Indian craftsmanship, reinterpreted through contemporary silhouettes and a global sensibility, becomes the foundation for a dialogue between memory and innovation, local identity and international expression.

In Florence in January 2027, this dialogue will take on a new form: an encounter between cultures, textiles and creative visions that invites us to reconsider the meaning of luxury itself, restoring value to time, the human hand and the singularity of every creation.
